How to choose the right laptop charger wattage

A replacement charger needs more than the right-looking plug. Match the electrical requirements and connector before you order.

1. Read the label on the original adapter

Find the output voltage and amperage on the old adapter. Wattage is commonly printed directly, but it can also be calculated by multiplying volts by amps.

2. Match the connector

USB-C, barrel connectors, and manufacturer-specific tips are not interchangeable. Compare the connector and the laptop model or service tag.

3. Do not undersize the wattage

A lower-wattage adapter may charge slowly, trigger a warning, or fail to power the system under load. When in doubt, verify compatibility before purchasing.

4. Send us the part number

A photo of the original adapter label plus the laptop model is usually enough for us to help narrow the correct replacement.
